St. Louis Blues Weekly Review – January 16th – January 23rd

At this time last week, I was recapping and (gasp) complimenting the Blues for a strong end to a vicious west coast road trip. Hell, I even predicted that the Blues would get a possible 3 out of 6 points.

I’d personally like to apologize to the Blues fans for my rare moment of optimism.

In a season where the theme is “consistently inconsistent” the Blues added to the layers of frustration by three fantastic bed shittings.

  • The Blues started the week with a promising first 2 periods vs. Ottawa then was dominated in the 3rd dropping to the Sens by the score of 6-4.
  • Everyone saw Washington on the schedule and knew that this could be a rough night. But who thought that the score might have been 7-1 halfway through the 3rd period?
  • Winnipeg as predicted was the most frustrating of the trio. Only the 2016-17 Blues could pepper 25 shots on goal in a period, not score and still lose 5-3.

Enjoy a brief recap of the past week.

The Good

  • Line of Alexander Steen, Jaden Schwartz, and Paul Stastny combined for 15 points in 3 games. (7G-8A)
  • Ryan Reaves and Chris Neil has one hell of a tilt.
  • Patrik Berglund, Stastny, and Kyle Brodziak well over 50%.
  • Pheonix Copley made this save.

The Bad

  • 9 times short handed. 5 Power Play Goals Against.
  • Vladimir Tarasenko: Goal scoring drought up to 7 games.
  • Blues defensemen. Toe picks during transition, more lost puck battles, failure to cover in the zone. No way this is a Brad Shaw issue.
  • The goaltending. Allen and Hutton. Finkle and Einhorn. No need for stats, the thought of the goaltending alone makes me throw up in my mouth.

Instead of listing Lehtera in the bad section every week. I thought I’d dedicate a whole blurb in honor of his futility.

This week’s stat line: 0 G – 0 A – 0 P, -2, 0 PIM and a whopping 38.1% from the face off dot. Scholarship was revoked for the Winnipeg game but word on the street is that he found his blackmail photo’s of Hitch and was back on a line with Tarasenko today at practice.

Goaltender Trade Rumors

Everyone is starving for trade activity including the National media and I can’t say I blame them in the least bit. But can we knock it off with the Ben Bishop or MAF trade requests? Hell, I think I saw a Cory Schneider rumor floating around.

Unless you’re trading Allen, the Blues cannot afford to acquire a top line net-minder. It makes zero sense financially along with the fact that it’s going to cost you a bundle to get one of them.

Save your assets to upgrade your center and defense core.

Fun With Polls

Here was the results of two of our favorite polls conducted the past week.

I disagree with this poll and call bullshit. Blues fans way overvalue and fellatio on every prospect throughout the system. I cannot see this many people encouraging Doug Armstrong to trade a precious prospect to rid the club of a horseshit contract.

This poll I find to be very accurate. A 3 game losing streak isn’t the end of the world, maybe if the losses were closer the optimism would change.

Lippo’s Top 5 Trade Targets (This Week)

  1. Matt Duchene
  2. Tyler Bozak
  3. J.T. Miller
  4. Anthony Duclair
  5. David Backes 5b. Kevin Hayes

Upcoming Schedule

(2) Games and an All Star Game: Tuesday 1/24 @ Pittsburgh, Thursday 1/26 @Minnesota. Carter Hutton starts Tuesday with Allen getting the nod on Thursday.

Prediction: The Blues should go 0-2, knowing them they will go 2-0 and we will have 4 days of fluff pieces on how they got their groove back. I don’t see Carter Hutton shutting down Pittsburgh. Blues go 1-1 with an ugly loss vs. Pitt and an OT win in Minnesota to save Hitch’s job.
